Nice small town close to largest town in Kansas (Wichita). Has hospital, community college, state park and lake, good schools, and some retail. Not alot of jobs but many people commute to Wichita- 30 miles. Low crime, very quiet at night.

Is there anything for kids to do in El Dorado? We are considering moving from Florida to be close to my parents, but I am concerned that my kids will be bored to tears there.

They also have an overzealous police force. Apparently they LOVE to hand out tickets for everything under the sun. Intersection cameras at nearly every intersection too. A regular money making enterprise to excess. In addition, they seem to want to stop and check ID for you doing nothing (AKA just being law abiding). They have been spotted driving around town writing down vehicle license numbers presumably to hand out tickets later. Courthouse is on par with other corrupt courthouses elsewhere. Be aware that the school district wants to condition you like fish in an aquarium. Apparently they want to control the parents as well as the students. Schools have some security, but definitely not enough. You can use 254 to get to the northeastern part of Wichita or the turnpike (I35) to get to the southeastern part near Kellogg. The nearest town in the other direction is Emporia, about an hour drive-ish on I35. In 2014 they are supposed to resurface 254 between Wichita (Segwick county) and Butler county line. Annual state fishing licenses start at $22.50 and go up. Double for out of state folks. And you need a park sticker to get into the state park to fish. Walnut river nearby is nothing more than a creek. Very small and rarely any fish in it. The town does have numerous fast food restaurants, numerous small parks, a movie cinema, walmart, and a GM dealer. Gas prices are generally on par with those in Wichita. Odd too because the refinery is 1 mile down from the main street. El Dorado Kansas is considered a 'Bedroom community' meaning it is basically a place to sleep for folks who commute to Wichita. If you want to shop elsewhere or have some nightlife, then be prepared to drive 25-35 miles one way. Sales taxes are higher than in some places. If you want anything computer related you are stuck with very high prices and very small choices and only in Wichita. Internet connection and speed is deplorable. Their fastest (and unreliable) speed is slower then the slowest compared to most other cities. You get Cox (the fastest, but still incredibly slow) and ATT (DSL) which in most cases can be slower than an old dial up modem. And if the wind blows or it rains, internet is very spotty at best. Snow/ice removal is sub par. Be prepared to shovel your own street if you want to get anywhere or get a 4-wheel drive. El Dorado is best suited for either commuters or those with nervous conditions who want a quiet boring life.
